Getting discount on magnets

Postby windgat on Mon Sep 24, 2007 9:18 am

For those in Cape Town or other parts of South Africa, what we should do is pool our magnets needs. I am sure we can negotiate a discount for larger quantities. So if anyone wants some magnets at a good price and not in too much of a hurry, post here, and we can order them all in one batch.

I might need some magnets in the near future. At the moment I am first going to try out a modified version of a Fisher & Paykel washing machine motor for a project in Grootbrak. I live in Bellville and also want to put up something legal here at home. Do you have any prices on those Neo's yet?

Ok, I will keep in touch. I plan to get some around the end of January. I think the basic cost is around R30 for N45 12.5 x 25.4 x 50mm, and then there is shipping and duty perhaps. So i think I will order 50, use 24 and offer the rest to whoever wants them... or maybe I will order 100 if there is definite interest. Kepp in touch about your plans...

Hi there in Peru! Como te vas? The magnets that we want to order is also from overseas (most likely from China). The prices that "windgat" mentioned elsewhere in this forum is in South African Rand and will probably not apply in your region, but as a guideline, you may use our Rand prices and divide by 7. This will tell you what we pay in South Africa in US$. You may also try a Google search for suppliers near you. Inform us of your progress.
Hasta la proxima vez!

I have been doing a lot of searching and co,paring prices, and will post the results here soon.

Thanks x. I called them a month or two ago, but didn't get much joy. Can't remember now exactly what, but I think they didn't deal with any sizes appropriate to wind generators.

Hi,

Has anything come of this group purchase of magnets ? Are the Fisher & Paykel smartdrive motors available in SA anywhere ? I'd be very interested in the group purchase of magnets escpecially if the F&P motor isn't available which seems like a quick way to get started.

Thanks

HI there. Things are coming together with the magnets. The top of the range seems to be grade N42 50x25x12.5mm nickel coated which I will get into Cape Town at about R95 each. The same size grade N35 would be about R80 each. These are very special prices including VAT, clearance and shipping to Cape Town, negotiated with the importer after protracted negotiations re importance of windpower, future business etc. etc. If anyone wants to get on board, please email magnets@windpower.org.za with amount and grade required - It will be first come first served, and payment by cash on collection from me in Claremont. No resellers, only private buyers please.

Hi Windgat
I think I need 8 of 50 * 50 * 16 magnets for my mill but Magnoteck prices are a joke.
is there somewhere I can look up the price if they come in with your order.
Cheers Frans.

Hi Frans, sorry for slow response. Yes, these magnets are not cheap, and shipping costs are also high, since they qualify as 'restricted goods'.

I have only 50x25x12.5mm N35 left from the batch I mentioned, which I can pass on at R86 each (normally R115 each). There would also be postage costs, which are quite low for within SA if you can wait 5 days or so.

See the 'Kits' page for more info on what magnet products are available via the web site.

There seems to be a problem getting magnets, so why not use a car alternator with a large pulley on the blades side to a small pulley on the alternator, this should increase the speed of the alternator, has anyone tried it??

Not tried, but you can find plenty who have on the internet.
It certainly can be done, but its not easy to accomplish.

The magnets are probably the best (cheapest?) solution for a low-power output.

The magnets in magnetron's are powerful they are round,
57mm dia with a 21mm hole in the centre and 10mm thick, about 5 per magnetron
Should be available from microwave repair shops,
does anyone have experience using them???

Hi there. From what I have read these are not nearly as powerful as rare earth magnets.

See the topic 'Magnet strength' in this forum for a simple jig to measure magnet strength.

It would be great if you could build this jig, test two of those magnets, and post the results here!
