Bicycle wheel turbine w/stator & magnets on rim

Hello: I've been working on a different design for a wind turbine that can be easily and cheaply developed from readily-available parts. The basic design for the turbine itself was developed by Ted Baer a number of years ago and is outlined in http://www.instructables.com/id/Ted-Bae ... l-Windmill. Coupling this idea with a design developed by Imad Mahawili through Grand Valley State University's Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center for a blade tip generating system (see a commercial version at: http://www.earthtronics.com/honeywell.aspx). I would like to see if anyone on this forum could provide some expertise for this idea. If you look at the Ted Baer design, he has used the rim of the bike wheel as a pulley to drive a generator using a continuous belt. However, coupling his turbine wheel design with the concept of the Mahawili concept, a design could be produced that used the turbine wheel rim as a housing for a stator winding. Then a simple hoop could be developed from another slightly larger bike wheel that would hold a series of rare earth magnets as the rotor. A slip ring connector at the central axle would be used. Anyone have any ideas on this concept?

Sounds interesting. Better to switch the magnets and coils - then no need for a failure prone slip ring.

Not sure how you intend to make the coils and the magnets face each other. The 'simple hoop' ... would that have spokes, or how would it be held in place?
If you can knock together a simple sketch that would be a good starting point.
