can I use my generator motor?

Postby Chisum on Sun Aug 16, 2009 10:59 pm

Hi All,

looking for help. I have a coleman gas generator and was wondering if I can use the generator part as the motor for a windmill.
Here are the specs of what I have.

Coleman I/C 4000
Model 534502
Watts 4000
Volts 120 240
Amps 33.3 16.7
Hz 60
Phase 1
Insul . cl.: f
Amb temp 40c

any help will be appreciated.

Wind turbined rotate at speeds from 0 to 500rpm (approx). Your Coleman generates max power @ 4000rpm. So . . you will need to speed-up the turbine ±10x to get anything useful out of the Coleman.

Yes, and gearing up like that will lose quite a bit of power.

BTW, how do you know its 4000rpm, Greystoke?

Google "Coleman generators", but they're very scarce with specs. The 4000rpm actually applies to a 5000Watt genset.
Close enough :?:

Perhaps only way to be sure is to spin it up with an electric drill and measure the voltage...

You're going to need a good drill . . . the Coleman's "no-load" idling speed is 2000rpm :!:
