Hi all,

I have started looking into wind power to generate electric to run the solar water heating system I installed last year. I am looking at building a VAWT. I have a few questions to start with and when I actually start the build I am sure I will be calling on your expertise to help me through.
1 what is the best or easiest vain to construct?
2 is it necessary to use neodymium magnets ( they are quite expensive).
3 is the size of the magnet compared to the coils important, e.g should the magent be able to fit inside of the coil. How deep should the magnets be etc.

Just so you know I alredy have a battery bank that I acquired from a electric pallet truck, 12 x 2volt cells wired to give 12 volts. The water heating system I want to run has two water pumps as used in a central heating system. I also have a 500w 12v DC -220v AC inverter.

Any help would be great.

Vane (or blade) construction is the part I have found the hardest. Perhaps something using sections of PVC pipe? Look around this forum for ideas.

Yes, powerful magnets are needed to get the voltages required.

Yes, the coils legs should be the same length as the magnets.

Hope that helps!
