#22 gauge magnet wire

Winding the coils and making the stator

#22 gauge magnet wire

Postby charlie_ruizpr on Fri Jul 09, 2010 6:10 am

I will be building a VAWT that is 32 inches wide and 24 inches high, THE 3 blades will be 3 inches by 24 inches. The neo magnets will be 2x 1 x 1/2 on a 10 inch metal disk with 12 on each disk and nine coils in between.

How many turns would I need with a #22 gauge wire for a 12 volt applicationand can I use 2, 3, or 4 strands per coil?

This all depends on the RPM you will have. There are graphs on the 'benchtesting' page of the main website you might find useful.

I have always used 1 strand per coil... I guess it depends on how you connect the strands to each other once the coils are wound. In series would give you more voltage at lower rpm. In parallel makes it the same as using thicker wire (although multiple thin strands are easier to work with than one thicker strand).

Do you think that this wind turbine will be good because of it's size?

After I experiment with this I will be building a horizontal axis wind turbine may 5' or 10' it depends on the 15' tower I will make first. If the stator that I am making for the vawt does not work well (wich I think it won't) I will use it on the hawt.

Still getting the pieces together for the vawt, trying to build it before saturday, so that my brother and I can test it w/o a load first

Well I put my turbine on the tower but it does not turn so it is time to convert it to a lenz2 turbine.

Without lenz2

Hi charlie
the problem whit the turbines is that thy don't start by them self thy need help I solved the problem my making variable pitch angels so if the wind hits the blade it will move and it will give lift in the rite angle as you can see there are weight on the blades so that the centrifugal force pulls it back to have a beter angle of attack

if you make scoops in the centre of the blades it will help too start the blades to spin
just an idea of mine as the drawing

Need to change the bearings and give the blades a 9 degree angle to see if I can get more rpm. When the wind blows it tends to try to turn backwards and also with gust winds it does not turn anymore, I beleive it is do to the bearing being that they are old and were submerged in water.

I don't think bearings can be the cause of the turbine going in reverse. It seems more likely that this is an issue with the blades.

What can be the problem with this?

Try to makethe core of the blade 90 deg to the shaft

It is 90 degrees to the shaft I was told to try it at 9 degrees and see how it works. Also the turbine does not try to turn backwards it trys to turn at low wind speed and sort of reurns slightly but turns backwards like 2 or 3 degrees. I turned it by hand this morning and then it started turning a couple of minutes later but slowly.
