How to connect coils

There are two ways to connect the coils of a three phase generator: star and delta. I have found star to be the best.

Firstly, all coils in a single phase are connected in series. In the design on this site, that means 3 sets of 3 coils each. The coils in each phase are evenly spaced around the stator, and each coils must have exactly the same number of turns.

If you number the phases 1,2 and 3, and label the start of each phase 's', and the end 'e', then connect as follows:
- Connect 1s,2s and 3s to each other
- Connect 1e,2e and 3e to 3 of the the AC inputs of two bridge rectifiers (one AC connection is left unused)
- Connect the two + (positive) tabs of the two rectifiers to each other
- Connect the two - (negative) tabs of the two rectifiers to each other

It doesn't matter which side of the phase is the start or the end - just be consistent. Each phase must be connected up exactly the same way.

For those of you (like me) that have no idea what all this Star and Delta stuff is, here is a page that explains it quite nicely :D

Hi Nigel. Did you look at the link in the post above? That seems to cover it - let us know if that's still not clear.

Here is a diagram of how to connect the coils
