Re: where to start?

Hi there. It can be daunting! It is a big subject, and there are many aspects, as you have seen. Wind speed is best measured at the actual site, but approximations can be got from nearby airports, flying clubs (e.g. paragliders) or weather stations. As for the other questions ...

where to start?

... like to build your design but I am unsure about: Magnets? how do you decide what to use? Coils? How do you decide? How do I find out our wind speed? How many rpm's will this wind speed achieve? How much volts, amps, watts will this generate? Thank you in advance...

Star wars machine

... in one section. Is it worth rescuing this baby and will it be easy to repair as the coils are covered in a resin or something? Maybe for a biggish wind turbine. Now somebody please give me short answer, Would you have bought it for the price of scrap metal, R5,40 per kg?

Re: Electrical cable getting twisted up in knots

To be on the safe side, I am going to install a "stop end" on the swivel mount to limit rotation to about 355 degrees.
The catch will be to figure out the best placement of the stop end in relation to the most active wind directions for my area.

Hello Windgat, I am building a battery charging circuit that uses an input similar to wind - unpredictable and having a wide window of voltages and I need help to build a charge controller for the same. I find your circuit is a good starting point. However, I need ...

Re: #22 gauge magnet wire

After I experiment with this I will be building a horizontal axis wind turbine may 5' or 10' it depends on the 15' tower I will make first. If the stator that I am making for the vawt does not work well (wich I think it won't) I will use it on the hawt. Still ...

Re: Why wind power is better than solar panels

The 300Watt with the 2m blades is based on the 3rd power average. The 50 Watt with the 1m blades is a mistake and should have been 70Watt.

Re: Why wind power is better than solar panels

Yes, at that low wind speed there is not much power available. But remember, at double that speed, there is EIGHT times more power. Calculations based on average speed are only valid for a linear power-speed relationship. For a wind ...

Now THAT remains to be seen !

I've given up of trying to get sustained power out of the wind. It can't be done, unless you go really BIG. At an average windspeed of 3.5m/s (=average in PE) a one meter blade will get you

Re: My projects

Looks good.
Do you have any idea of windspeed vs RPM? That would allow a 'cut in' wind speed to be calculated.

Re: market for wind generators

Marcel, you still here? Did you connect with Reinhard Otto? Basically I am looking for a low rpm PM DC motor to charge deep cycle 12V batteries, do have something or can you guide me?

Thanks

Re: Size & Shape of Coils

Hi Windgat Just a question on coil shape, I have built a vertical wind generator, 9 coils with just one 12 magnetic plate. On design, I did not worry about the inner dimmension of the coil. I used 40mm top and 20mm bottom for the inside of the coils. Why ...

Re: Vertical air turbine

I was hoping that somebody has changed the squirrel cage rotor with a permanent magnet rotor. Something like milling the rotor down to fit magnets onto the rotor.
