An old small DC motor, with three cups on the top. Calibrate wind speed vs voltage by driving in your car (on a windless day). Still it on a pole,
attach wires and a voltmeter, and there you go!

Logging it over time is not so simple.... let me know if you come up with a cunning plan for that!

... crystals off the surface of the lead. Maybe that is what is happening - have you looked at the output of your charger with a scope? A digital voltmeter is a notoriously inaccurate way to measure a fluctuating voltage.

I guess it would. To confirm, attach the voltmeter, spin by hand, and watch which way gives a -'ve voltage.
