Re: Smaller Unit

A DC motor which for e.g. does 3000rpm at 24V, if turned at 500rpm will make about 4V. Gearboxes (or pulleys) are a bit of a pain to make, and also lose a lot of energy. The gearboxes on large turbines is apparently the most ...

... are good to charge a 12V battery. What generator are you using? Your problem is typically of projects which use a car alternator or other high rpm motor as a generator. To make it turn downwind, try reversing the blades, and removing the tail - that alone might do it.

Re: Simply the Motor part

Advise to the genral group. Using an induction motor is a bad idea. (It can wrok so don't get me wrong) Induction motors require "exiting" this to put it simply means you need to run a constant charge into the coils to generate a magnetic ...

Re: Simply the Motor part

Welcome to the quest! 1. What RPM is required to generate the voltage you require? That is the crucial question - start there. You may find a very high RPM is needed - see posts elsewhere on this site re alternators. 2. I don't. There is a blade calculator on the main page however that can be used t...

... it seems like we have a fair amount of medium to slow wind. First Question if I may: Now for building a generator, how would using an induction motor fair as a wind turbine? Has anybody tried this, it produces 3 phase power and 220v approx 740w per 1 HP. ( that's if I understand things correctly) ...

Re: AC or DC Motor as Generator

Hi Windgat, have you perhaps had time to look at my Starwars machine under General? Would you buy it for R1000 and can I rewire the burnt wire section or will I have to redo the whole thing?

THANKS!

Dankie Windgat, let's day I am somewhat constrained in the diy department. Got hold of 1 or 2 sources in the meantime, but pricey.

Re: Wind Power

Hi Garrick, sorry I don't. What you want is a low voltage low rpm motor - i.e. a motor that when turned slowly (say 300rpm) produces the voltage you want (say 12V or 24V). This is unusual as most electric motors are high rpm.
