Re: Using a Car alternator.

Hi DIYman. First step is to check what rpm is needed to get the voltage you want. Say you want to run a 12V system, then it means you need 14V from the alternator. So spin it until it gets 14V, and measure the rpm. How to do this depends on your instruments and ingenuity!

Re: Need some advise please

... you get 13.5 voltage you are good to charge a 12V battery. What generator are you using? Your problem is typically of projects which use a car alternator or other high rpm motor as a generator. To make it turn downwind, try reversing the blades, and removing the tail - that alone might do it.

Re: Farm windmill

Yes it can. If you use an alternator, then a gearing system is needed to turn the very low rpm of the blades into a fast enough RPM to generate the required voltage. Or you can build a low RPM generator, as described on the main site, and connect it via a belt or gear system.

... in 1 or more stages that will up the speed. To do this in 1 stage 1 might need a weel or gear of about 1500mm in radius on the windmill. On the alternator side you then needs a weel or gear of about 75mm radius. If I remember correctly from school maths the formula for the surcumfere of a circle ...

Re: Farm windmill

I have also heard of people who have added a belt drive at the top of the tower, and bolted on a car alternator. It needs to be geared up a lot, as the alternator needs to turn fast to generate enough voltage.

Hi Drake. Nice stuff to get for free!

Neither option you mention is ideal. Search this forum for 'alternator' to see discussions around that.

Re: Getting discount on magnets

There seems to be a problem getting magnets, so why not use a car alternator with a large pulley on the blades side to a small pulley on the alternator, this should increase the speed of the alternator, has anyone tried it??

Re: alternator power

40Ah in 24 hours = about 2amps continuous, which is about 25 watts Lets take a 1m radius blade, and work with max possible power. 10km/h = 2.7m/s max power 21Watts 15km/h = 4.2ms max power 82 Watts So wind speed is critical. Since you will lose power by gearing up with a pulley (or a chain or a gear...

Re: How much power does a wind generator produce?

... - I can't justify the expense of R5000 - R6000 on magnets alone. It's just not on, and I'm now investigating the use of a standard mains voltage alternator. The one I'm looking at is about R3000 for 2.4kVA (@ 3000rpm  ).
